In the TV news business, this phrase is kind of a joke.

It’s what’s known as a “throwaway tease”.

A lazy appeal to the audience to stick around just a little longer.

“Are your groceries killing you?
The answer may surprise you!

“Who’s buried in Grant’s Tomb?
The answer may surprise you!

But, here’s the thing.

I’ve kind of adopted it as my motto.

Not in a lazy way.

Quite the opposite, in fact.

If my writing surprises you, I think I’m doing something right.

Here’s some of what I think is my most surprising work.
